Terrowin hadn't heard from Wolfgang Van Dam in several days. She'd been cooped up in his tower, waiting anxiously for him to return after their romantic evening together. Nothing. For hours, she'd paced back and forth, reading books, leaving only to purchase meals in the market. The full moon was approaching, and so, she tried to blame his absence on the fact that he was trying to protect her from another unfortunate run in with his alter ego. The young, hopeful girl tried to ignore the fact that perhaps he was simply letting her know that he didn't want to see her anymore.
The thought broke her heart. She wanted desperately to believe that Wolfgang wasn't the kind of man to leave a woman when he got what he wanted from her. Unfortunately, Terrowin had to come face to face with the realization that she knew very little about the enigmatic older man. She had agreed to help him after having known him for only a day, after he'd tried to kill her. Perhaps her decision had been a mistake. And so, Terrowin had left the Raevaryn university to begin the trek back to her farm. She had come every few days to maintain her cows, especially her heifer, Daisy. And as the city faded behind her, she tried to revel in the fresh air, the sounds of nature, and the smell of wildflowers. This was home. By going to the city, making love with Wolfgang, and dreaming that perhaps she would have a life in the courts, she had tried to be someone she wasn't. She was just plain, quiet Terrowin who was destined for a gentle life with her livestock. It was a simple life, and it was a good life. Shed never needed or wanted for anything before, and she'd be damned if she let herself cry over Wolfgang.

Wolfgang breathed a sigh of relief as Terrowin's farm house came into view, a candle in the window giving him hope that she was safely inside. He'd returned to his University in the middle of the night to find that she had left. He couldn't blame her, of course, he'd disappeared without leaving her so much as a note. Now, he approached her farm on horseback as the earliest rays of dawn began to appear over the horizon. He hadn't slept at all that night and was balancing on a fine line of being drunk or hungover from the previous nights events.
Dismounting his horse, he made his way to the front door and found himself uncharacteristically hesitant. He was nervous, not something he felt often, but something that she seemed to be able to bring out of him. It didn't help as he remembered the last time he'd been on her farm- terrorizing her in his wolf form. He truly wanted to see her happy, no matter how many times he failed miserably at it. He knocked firmly on the door twice and then paused, "Terrowin. It's me,"

Terrowin had fallen asleep, curled up in her large armchair, swaddled in blankets. She'd been reading by candlelight, having taken a couple of books with her when she'd left Wolfgang's tower. As the knocking roused her she straightened up, blinking sleep from her eyes. Was she still dreaming, or did she hear his voice? Daisy lumbered to her feet and bolted to one of the rooms, not keen on seeing Wolfgang again. Terrowin quickly pushed herself out of the chair, wrapping the blankets around her as she padded to the door. Her hair was a tangled, sleepy mess, and she quickly raked her fingers through the sandy blonde strands to tame it.
"Is everything okay?" she inquired as she opened the door, trying to be nonchalant but caring all at once. She looked up at him, taking him in, and wondered if that was liquor she could smell. She wouldn't have been surprised. What was he doing here?

Wolfgang couldn't help but smile as she opened the door, appearing drowsy in the most endearing way possible. He braced his arms against either side of doorway and leaned forward until only his face had crossed the threshold of the door, "I'm okay. Are you?" he pressed, his voice soft, though his tired features alluded to more than he was letting on.
Any other soul might've slammed the door in his face, but he had faith that Terrowin was far more forgiving than the average person. Whether or not he deserved that compassion was up for debate, "May I come in?"

She studied him, taking in his appearance, and, for lack of a better word, his puppy dog eyes. Wolfgang was right- she was more forgiving than most people would be. And, whenever possible, she would always prefer to have a conversation than assume anyone's intentions. So she opened the door and took a step back, gesturing for him to come in. "Please, have a seat. Would you like anything to drink? Water, perhaps?" Terrowin moved into the kitchen, already starting to build a fire. Might as well get a small smolder going, she would need to cook breakfast soon anyway. And though dawn was breaking, it was still somewhat dim in her home without the full light of day.
"I'm doing fine. I just wasn't sure where you were, it's been a few days without word. I needed to be someplace I felt at home," She stated carefully, but plainly. She wasn't about making pleasantries and beating around the bush to get to the heart of things, but she did try to be direct as tactfully and kindly as possible.

Wolfgang entered the house as soon as he was given permission and made his way toward the arm chair that she'd been sleeping in, sinking into it with a heavy sigh of relief. He was delighted to find that the seat was still warm and her scent lingered around him comfortingly, "Yes. Water, please," he replied, feeling a steady hangover creeping up on him as he watched her move about the kitchen.
"I shouldn't have left you like that. Especially after everything," he paused, pursing his lips as though trying to find the right words. He was far more accustomed to enduring yelling matches and physical confrontation than the passive way that Terrowin dealt with conflict. It only made him feel that much more inclined to worship her and make it up to her, "You can be angry with me, you know. Tell me if I upset you. I can say that I'm sorry a million times over, but you deserve more than that."

Terrowin got him a cup of water after she'd tended the fire, and took a seat on the chair next to his, still wrapped comfortably in her wool blanket. She considered his words, trying to discern if he was earnest or not. Terrowin tended to trust what people told her, regardless of whether they were in earnest or not. "I am upset, actually." Terrowin bit her lower lip, and even though she knew she had a right to be upset, she still felt guilty for it. She didn't want to make him feel bad. "I thought that perhaps you did not want me any longer. The thought also crossed my mind that you were in trouble. I need to be in the know, Wolfgang. I don't like to be left guessing, and I like to know where I stand." She watched him intently, "I cannot be with a man who cannot communicate, or who withholds information. You both scared and hurt my feelings." And she was still waiting for an explanation.

Wolfgang gulped down half the glass of water before listening to her attentively. He was happy to see her speaking her mind, but the things she mentioned only confirmed his feelings of guilt and forced him to face the fact that his actions continued to hurt the people he cared about most. As he'd revealed to Sasha just hours ago, he was fully aware of his shortcomings and poor choices, but he wasn't sure he was capable of or even wanted to change.
"I do want you," he shifted forward slightly, as though he wanted to reach for her but was restraining himself, "It was never my intention to make you feel that way. Sometimes I get scared, too. And the way I deal with that is to distract myself with other things, which usually just digs me into a deeper hole," he shook his head, redirecting his thoughts, "I will not lie to you, Terrowin. You already know more about me than anyone else." It was true, "I went to a healer. She has an incredible ability that I think might lead to more answers about my condition. She's agreed to help me and this is the most hopeful I've felt in a long time,"

Terrowin listened to his explanation, and found herself softening. It was a positive turn of events for him, without a doubt. Hope was a powerful thing, and Terrowin would never begrudge a soul of hope. She reached across the distance between them, twining her fingers with his. "I'm glad for you, Wolfgang," she murmured genuinely, giving him a gentle smile. "And I understand that navigating this situation between us can be scary. Are you willing to put in the work?" She asked him softly, titling her head. What were his intentions with her, anyway? Terrowin liked to have clarity in such matters, and knowing what Wolfgang saw for them going forward was important to her.

Wolfgang watched as their fingers laced together and felt his heart twist painfully, like it wanted to leap out and permanently attach itself to Terrowin. He squeezed her hand and knew in that moment that he was doomed. He needed her more than any drug, any person, anything. Perhaps it was for selfish reasons, but he would never let her go.
He gave her a swift tug and pulled her up and onto his lap, cradling her within the blanket, "I'll do whatever you need me to do," he promised, feeling a fragile hope swelling in his chest along with the first inkling of a desire to actually change his ways. He pressed his lips to her temple and closed his eyes, "Just don't give up on me."

She gazed at him, all trusting and understanding, and placed a kiss on his forehead when he drew her into his lap. "Just remember that we need to communicate now. Let me know where you are, what you're up to. That's going to be important." She bit her lower lip, "I won't give up on you, I promise. But are you still going to marry the princess?" Terrowin was still trying to decide if she would be okay with that. If Terrowin was being honest, she'd rather have him to herself.

Wolfgang seemed hesitant to answer, although he had already made up his mind on the subject on his way to the farm. He knew he had to do what was best for everyone involved. And yet, it wasn't an easy decision to make. Many people would have cause to be angry with him: Evolet, Alaric, Alister... There would be major fallout, but it had to be done, "No," he answered simply, "I'm calling it off. It is what's best for everyone, and for us," He studied her gaze, seeking acceptance and perhaps joy over the decision.

He was not disappointed as joy did indeed spark in her eyes. She pulled him closer and kissed him fervently, then peppered his face with additional, smaller kisses. Never in her wildest dream had she imagined falling in love with a man like him, a man who made her feel so deeply and truly and with such abandon. "i feel poorly that I've derailed your plans. Will it be worth it?" She studied his eyes. They were throwing everything he had set up away, just so that they could give themselves a chance.

The widest of grins spread across Wolfgang's face as she showered him in kisses. He'd never felt so hopeful for the future before. He had hope for a cure, hope to better himself, and hope for love. He wrapped his arms tightly around her and kissed her deeply, as though to silence her worries, "It's more than worth it. The princess will find a worthy husband, the kingdoms will find their own way. I was never meant to be a part of it. I know my purpose now," he promised, stroking her blond locks behind her ear.

She grinned back at him, sharing in that feeling of hope. This man had completely stolen her heart. “Do you want me to live with you in the city? What’s next for us?” She gushed, allowing herself to be completely swept up.
