Alister listened. After all, he wasn’t an unreasonable man. He did not have the same fear or hatred of magical creatures as his advisor. “Sebastian will have to be tested,” he said after a moment, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. They would have to track him down. “How would you suggest I appease Nethilor?” If Wolfgang could give him a viable solution, Alister would give him his trial.

Wolfgang knew that Sebastian becoming a target was inevitable, but it only added to the mountain of guilt. He sighed, finding that for once he didn't have a convenient solution to the problem. Would Evolet and Alaric really insist on having his head? Probably, but it was still hard to imagine that the reasonable family would be out for bloody vengeance. All he had to offer was his riches, his university, his research. None of that would make up for the lives he had taken.
"Give them control of my trial. Let them decide my fate. All I ask is that I have a chance to make my case." And if they decided to kill him...Well, he would figure that out when the time came.

Alister thought that this seemed like a fair proposition. "Very well. I will speak with Bram and Roman and we will set a date for your trial. You may choose someone to help present your case if you so choose, or represent yourself." Alister adjusted his cloak, turning away from Wolfgang's cell. "Good luck to you, Van Dam." With that, the king swept out of the dungeons.

Sasha had heard the news some time ago. Naturally. Something like this did not stay hidden for long. And finally, she could not stay away. She had promised Wolfgang to help him, and somehow, he had turned without the light of the full moon. Had her interference done something to him? With the permission of the king, Sasha was allowed to visit. She believed it was due to her meddling, that perhaps they thought she could continue to help. She doubted she ever really had. So she approached his cell, guided by a guard. "Wolfgang?" she called to him in the darkness, searching for his voice.

Imprisonment was finally starting to take a toll on Wolfgang. It was the silence, the darkness and discomfort, the lack of touch- all opposite of how he had been accustomed to living for so long. So when he heard a familiar voice utter his name, he could hardly get to his feet fast enough. He gazed out at Sasha, his heart throbbing with pure relief, "Sasha," he breathed. He drifted toward her, stopping before he hit the end of his chain as he had finally memorized the distance his leash would allow, "I knew you'd come..." But why had she come? Was she here to help? Or to say goodbye? Shame emanated from him and he was suddenly glad that she couldn't look into his eyes and see the guilt of what he'd done. He wanted to say a million different things, but he couldn't find the words.

Sasha pressed close to the bars, wondering if he could get close enough to touch her. No doubt he felt shameful, racked with guilt and fear. She wanted to ease some of that pain. "Of course I'd come, Wolfgang. I promised you I'd help you. And I can't help but feel... responsible." She bit her lower lip, pressing her forehead against the bars. She had missed his presence in her life, the connection that they'd had. "I think my magic harmed you more than it helped you. And now you're here."

Wolfgang longed to touch her, imagining the instantaneous relief that would follow. The gravity-like pull between them was distracting and he had to force himself not to beg for her hand. "No..." he wanted to argue the point, to assure her that it was something else. But no, Sasha had awoken the beast. And now, left alone to his own devices, he'd begun to bond with it. "Will you represent me in my trial?" he asked, "I know it's a lot to ask. But you might be my only hope." She was perhaps one of the only people that didn't want him dead. But, more than that, she was the most credible and knowledgeable person out there to make a case.

"Of course I'll represent you, Wolfgang," Sasha murmured, feeling her heart twist. Wolfgang wanted to make her feel better, but she had to take responsibility for what she'd done. "I'm sorry, I really am. I tried to help you, and I made it worst. Standing for you, no matter the cost, is the least I can do." Sasha had faced down cruel men before. It had taken something precious from her, but she'd survived. She would do it again. Sasha exhaled, feeling truly alone. For the first time in so long, she'd allowed someone into her life, and she had cost him his. "Will you let me touch you? I can soothe some of your worries, your fears." She reached her hand through the bars, her fingertips outstretched into darkness. She could hear the clank of his chains- would he be able to reach her? Offering him some comfort with her magic was the least she could do. "Tell me what happened, what you felt then. And what you feel now."

Wolfgang wasn't sure he could express his immense gratitude toward her. Having just one person on his side sparked the hope that had begun to dim within him, "Thank you," he breathed. He watched her hand reach through the bars and shivered with anticipation. Let her? He was seconds away from begging her. He shifted forward, straining against the metal chain that restrained one of his ankles until it dug into his skin. His hand reached for hers, but he hesitated just briefly, imagining the horrible emotions he was about to selfishly transfer to her. "I don't know how to live with what I've done, but I don't want to die," he paused, fingers inches from hers, "The wolf is growing stronger, but so am I." Perhaps he could show her. Closing the distance, he gripped her hand and closed his eyes, allowing the overwhelming relief to wash over him.

Sasha gave him her healing energy, soothing his fears and anxieties and guilt. At least, for the moment. The feelings would come back. She gripped his hand tightly, wishing she could hug him entirely. "I don't want you to die either, Wolfgang. I want you to be safe. I will beg for banishment as your punishment." She could feel the wolf within him, strong and proud and prowling. She exhaled softly, "I can feel it, just below the surface. Do you think you could learn to control it?"

After reveling in her healing touch for a few long moments, he was surprised to find that the wolf did not appear to be agitated by her. While it had wanted Alister dead immediately, it allowed Sasha to use her abilities without objection. Reluctantly, he forced himself to release Sasha's hand, knowing that if he held on for too long, it would be all the more painful to let go. He nearly fell to his knees, his body feeling refreshed for the time being. "I am learning," he whispered breathlessly, "I think...we're beginning to understand each other," he admitted, wondering if he sounded crazy for siding with the monster he had so long tried to destroy. "When is the full moon?" he asked suddenly. It was a question that had been weighing on his mind for some time, as he had lost track of the days from being in the dungeon for so long. It had to be approaching.

"Soon. Days, in fact," Sasha withdrew her hand, feeling cold without his touch. She wrapped her hands around the bars, breathing out softly. She didn't think it was crazy that he'd begun to try to understand the wolf. In fact, she believed that perhaps it was best. "What do you think life could be like, if you were to tame it?" And more importantly, what was he going to do for the full moon? Would these bars, his chains, hold him?

Wolfgang swallowed, his throat suddenly feeling dry. The trial needed to happen now, before he turned and inevitably broke out of this place. He didn't want to risk harming anyone, or be accused of escaping imprisonment, "Warn them that the trial must happen before the full moon. Soon," Pacing a few steps, he took a deep breath, "It's hard to imagine..." he struggled to picture a normal life, completely in control of his demon and the power it possessed, "I would protect my family, my loved ones. Earn their trust." It seemed like an impossible dream, but he would not give up, "Sasha, I need one more thing of you. Please, make sure Sebastian is safe. And Terrowin," his heart ached at the thought of her.

“I’ll see what I can find out for you.” Sasha promised him. She had ways of getting secrets- her services could be paid for with them. “I’ll try my best to expedite your trial as well.” She couldn’t deny that she was scared for him. But she would do her best to help. “Are they letting you bathe? Feeding you properly?”

Wolfgang looked at her and uttered a humorless laugh. Oh- he missed laughing. Things were so bleak now that it was hard to recall what he'd been like before. The infamous socialite turned mass murderer...would have made for a great joke in any other context, "Don't worry about me. I'm tougher than I seem," he promised. He could survive the filth and starvation; it was the ostracism that concerned him. "You're a good friend, Sasha."
