When she compared him to her parents, he rolled his eyes, not out of annoyance, but more so out of humor. He didn't smile though, even though a little tiny part of him wanted to. "Your parents seem like they have their heads firmly placed on their shoulders instead of the clouds," he teased back. There was a slight tsparkle in his eyes, even though his face was impassive and he sounded pretty serious.
He went about devouring another pastry, until she asked him about his profession. "I'm a blacksmith," he responded and rubbed the back of his head. The sleeve of his tunic bunched around the corded muscles of his arm. "I make a lot of the weapons used by the soldiers," though not all of them. He wasn't short of competition, but he was confident his work was one of the best. He took pride in making sure what he created was built to last.

Effie couldn’t help but giggle softly as he teased back, a playful gleam forming in her eyes. “Possibly, but living in the clouds can be fun at times,” She countered with a soft chuckle as the corners of her lips turned up in a teasing smile. Her gaze locked with his icy blue eyes as she held her cup of cider up to her lips, taking a slow sip.
She then placed her cup on the table and watched him curiously as he ate a few more of his pastries, wondering what his profession was. Effie’s bright eyes blinked at his response and let her gaze take in all of his form once more. She supposed that made sense, the soot on his face and his toned form showed to her that he was a hard worker. “Really? What is it like being a blacksmith? Do you like it?” She asked him in wonder as she leaned forward onto her elbows on the table, showing that she was all ears.

Ashen wasn't used to talking about himself. His interactions consisted of conversations with his clients which included merchants, soldiers and guards and it all revolved around work. He blanched for a moment because he wasn't even really sure how to answer.
"It's all Ive ever known" he said after a short pause. "And I take pride in what I do," he added as an afterthought. Neither of those statements were untrue. He'd grown up learning how to work metal and build things. His father had been a blacksmith and as far as he knew, so had his father's father.

Effie smiles softly at Ashen as she observed him mull over how to respond. She could tell by his demeanor that he wasn’t use to having small talk, especially about himself. She felt a little bad trying to pull him past the wall he had formed between him and others, but she felt it was possibly a good thing for him. She felt that no one should hide behind their walls and keep in their feelings, to her that meant only loneliness for those that did so and no one should be alone in her eyes. Though, there was another reason she wanted to pull him out of his shell. She wanted to learn more about him as well. She wasn’t sure why, she just felt tempted to learn more about what was behind his serious features.
“I can understand that, it’s always nice to learn your family’s trade. Being able to continue that line can be fulfilling,” She replied in complete understanding, she enjoyed working in the garden with her father at the castle. Not only was it how she learned of her powers but it made her happy to continue on her family’s passion. Effie’s smile lightened as he added in that he takes pride in his work. “I can tell, you seem like the type to be very precise in your craft. I would love to see some of the weapons you have made sometime, if that is alright with you?” She asked him cheerfully.

Ashen was a little taken aback by her request, but he quickly schooled his features to mask it. He wasn't expecting her to want to continue being in his company. He wasnt even sure how to feel about it. He looked away, awkwardly and ran his hand through his hair again. Clearly it was a nervous tick, which he didnt even know he had because he didnt get nervous often. Ashen didnt exactly allow himself to put himself into situations that would let him get nervous.
"I guess," he said eventually and gave a noncommittal shrug. "It shouldnt hurt...its a mess in there though. You may get your dress dirty," he warned. A part of him was saying that hoping shed back out at the thought of potentially ruining her dress. He didn't make friends and she seemed like she wanted to be...friends with him.

Although it was only for a moment, she noticed Ashen’s reaction to her question. Her brow raised a bit and curiosity glinted in her cloudy blue eyes. Was it so odd for her to ask to see his craft? Though she supposed not many women would ask such a question. She had an idea of what many women might have thought or tried to ask when it came to seeing a man with Ashen’s features and she had a feeling it didn’t have to do with his work.
She watched Ashen quietly as she waited for his response, wondering if he would allow her to see where he worked and what he he did. She wanted to give him time to think without interrupting, they had only just met and she would understand if he didn’t want her to see or continue to spend time with him. Though as he finally agreed, she couldn’t help but beam.
She almost asked if he was sure but didn’t want to test fate. Effie let a soft laugh leave her lips at his statement of possibly getting her dress dirty, she was not one to mind getting a little dirty when it came to work. “I work in a garden,” She began with a chuckle and continued with a bright smile on her lips, “you were just lucky to catch me without dirt on my dress today.”
Effie then finished her cider and glanced towards her basket of flowers. She then looked back towards Ashen and asked him with a bit of embarrassment in her tone, “I’m excited to see your craft, though I do need to deliver these flowers first. Would that be alright if I joined you afterwards?”

Ashen's eyes followed her to the basket of flowers and he nodded. "Yeah. That works," he said and gathered up the rest of his pastries. He stood and looked down at her expectantly, waiting for her to as well.
"My shop is a bit of a walk. Further down this street, you take the first right and the second left and should see my shop. It's across from a tavern," he told her and glanced around. He gave a nod of acknowledgement to the baker and then walked towards the exit. "I suppose I will see you later then," he said awkwardly.

Effie smiled brightly at him, glad he agreed for her to meet with him after her delivery. She then stood along with him and gathered up her things. Once she was sure she had all of her things, Effie looked towards the baker and gave a small nod in thanks for the delicious food.
Her cloudy gaze then returned to Ashen and listened carefully to his directions. She nodded her head in understanding and replied softly, “Alright, thank you Ashen. I will make sure to look for the tavern if I get lost.” As she joined the large man by the exit she blinked and stopped for a moment.
Effie quickly moved a few of the flowers in her basket around as carefully as she could in search of one particular one. She beamed as she found just the right one and gently picked it up out of the basket. She then looked up to Ashen and held out the yellow alstroemeria to him. “Here, this is a gift to make up for earlier,” She stated as she looked up into his icy blue eyes, letting a soft smile form on her lips.

Ashen was caught off guard by the gift and just blankly stared at the flower for several seconds, confusion etched across his face. A flower? She was giving him a flower? What was he supposed to do with a flower? But he felt an unsettling feeling of warmth spread through him as he gently plucked the yellow flower from her hand.
"Oh...thank you, I guess" he stammered and felt heat scatter across his cheeks. To his horror, he realized he was blushing. Oh god. He sharply turned away. "I best get going. See you around," he said quickly and walked off looking at the flower in his hand.
What a strange girl, he thought. But he did acknowledge she was sweet.

Effie’s soft smile brightened as Ashen took the flower and she couldn’t help but giggle at his reaction. “Flowers may have fleeting beauty but they hold meanings that last,” She explained to him as she looked from the flower he was holding to those still in the basket she held. Her gaze returned to his face and her brow raised a bit as he quickly turned away from her. Her head tilted to the side in curiosity and confusion, had she seen what she thought she had or were her eyes playing a trick on her? She couldn’t imagine someone like Ashen with a tint of pink on his cheeks but of course it is possible, everyone blushes though at some point or another right? She decided not to press about it and just smiled at the thought of her being the cause
As Ashen hastily turned to leave Effie stepped towards him instinctively but stopped herself. She barely knew him and after their interaction she wanted to learn more about him. She wanted to walk with him to where he worked, to keep talking with him, though she needed to go the other way to deliver what she had set out to do that morning. “See you around,” She replied in a soft tone as she watched him disappear into the crowds of the market. She waited a moment as she looked after him then turned and headed towards her friend’s shop.
