"You didn't do anything wrong," Bram said. "Someone else did, and you're... Practice, let's say." He tapped his fingers on the table for a moment, watching the fear grow in her expression, then leaned forward. "You're going to stay here for a while, Terrowin, but your stay won't be entirely uncomfortable; you have a real bed, and I'll make sure you're fed regularly." He paused. "I just need someone else to feel the way I do." And her friendship with Wolfgang posed an obvious opportunity to exploit those feelings. "Tell me, what are you most afraid of? And don't lie. There are no lies between us."

“Well, how do you feel?” Terrowin asked hesitantly, trying desperately now to bridge some sort of relationship between them that night keep her safe. She’d tamed one monster before, perhaps she could do it again. She tried not to focus too much on what he might mean.
“I’m afraid of losing people I love. Wolfgang, or my family who is far away. I fear losing my farm and my cows, especially my heifer Daisy. I fear dark, closed spaces. I fear not being free.” She whispered when he asked her. It would do no good to lie or struggle. She just hoped it would end soon.

Bram was an entirely different sort of monster than Wolfgang, though Terrowin wasn't to know that. He was a monster that had been made, not born, and he was a monster by virtue of his thoughts and feelings, rather than his anatomy. "I feel... Betrayed. Manipulated. Hurt. Angry," he said, not elaborating further upon what had brought about those feelings. She didn't need to know.
He kept his eyes on her as they continued their conversation, watching her with a strange intensity. She feared losing people. Good. Bram seemed satisfied with this answer and leaned back in his chair. "As a reward for your honesty, I'll let you decide. Would you like to begin now, or tomorrow?" What they would begin, he didn't specify, but obviously it wasn't anything good.

She didn’t want to begin at all. “I’m sorry you feel those things. It hurts, I know.” She wanted to beg him for her life, but she would take the day he offered and try to think of a way out in the meantime. “Please... can we begin tomorrow? I’m very tired and I would like to sleep.”

Bram seemed ambivalent toward her apologies and sympathy. "We'll begin tomorrow," he said. "Dinner will be brought to you later." Without specifying how exactly she would be given this food, he rose from his seat, went through the door, and locked it from outside.
