"Fell Tree-Runner, younger brother of that brute," he pointed to Fenris with an impish grin, then looked back at Hikari in awe, his eyes on Yamiyo. "I've never seen a dragon before. He's incredible," he noted, seeming somewhat embarrassed. There were times when Fell was reminded of how small his world had been. This group of strangers he was with now, minus Fenris, was fulfilling a need he had always repressed- the need to be immersed in the cultures and beliefs of others. He had always been much more open than others in his tribe.

Louisa watched as Derric shifted closer to her. When their shoulders bumped, she could feel her skin prickle and stomach flutter. She shifted her gaze to Derric, looking at him through half-lidded eyes, and smiled coyly. She was as ignorant of his plans as he was hers, but she wanted more of him, and she was used to getting what she wanted. After a few moments, she dragged her gaze to Hikari as the other woman moved to sit at the fire, noting with satisfaction that Hikari chose not to sit on the other side of Derric. While Fell seemed in awe Yamiyo, Louisa appeared utterly unimpressed by the presence of both the woman and the dragon.

Fenris watched the interaction between Louisa and Derric and Fell and Hikari. Good gods, it seemed like people were pairing off already. Fenris would have none of it. He turned his head away from everyone, focusing on tending to the fire to keep the blaze alight. "Go ahead Derric, tell us what the plan is for the morrow then. If we are to build an altar to please the goddess. Where shall we build it, and what tasks shall we each be responsible for?"

Derric took note of Hikari and masked his disappointment well. He observed them silently until Fenris spoke, eyes locking on to him. He remained silent after he was addressed for a moment, his attention shifting towards the fire, “We will use wood and stone. We will build it just outside of the Cave of Sighs, she will be more connected there.” Once they had truly gained their faith, Velka would grow stronger and they would expand her reach as they built her more shrines. “We’ll need to make a platform for her so we can perform a sacrifice of course to show our dedication. I understand we’re here for different reasons, but please understand the benefit outweighs the cost and morale. At any point you may walk away if my own and Velka’s endeavors misalign with your own.” He paused to look at each of the individuals, letting them reconsider. “With that being said, we will raid the town of Nethilor and take one of their civilians. This will not only show Velka our dedication through sacrifice, but also gain more of a following. There are forest dwellers such as us that were forced to reside in the kingdom, they will turn and walk along our side.” He knew it for fact, he felt it in his gut. “Velka will provide us with strength and guidance so please if there is any doubt, disregard it and trust in me and the forest.” Derric inhaled deeply before glancing at each of the individuals in front of him, “If you choose to stay, this is your tribe now. You will be treated with respect, you will have protection and good health, we will take care of one another, but to them?” Derric pointed in the direction of Nethilor, rising to his feet as he did so. “They will see our anger, the forest’s anger, our loneliness and any pain they’ve bestowed on us.” He stepped in front of Fenris, “If you choose to stay, you will no longer be broken,” he stepped in front of Fell, “Misplaced.” He moved in front of Hikari, “You won’t need to hide,” Derric moved slowly around the fire, stopping in front of Louisa. “You wont feel lonesome,” he made a point to look at each of them respectively. “To them we are barbarians, an unstoppable force. To us, we will be bonded, a family.” Derric moved next to his feline companion and placed his hands behind his back, “I assure you each that Velka will provide in our success, I put my life on it.” If they walked away now there would be no guarantee he would show mercy if they crossed paths again, but he kept that to himself. The Gypsy chuckled, “of course we simply start with that shrine.”

“I see, well it is nice to meet both of you,” Hikari replied and bowed her head slightly. Her dark brown eyes blinked at Fell’s comment and let a soft chuckle leave her lips. “This is only his smaller form, being born from shadows allows him to adjust his size. Just wait until you see his larger form,” She stated as the corner of her lips turned up slightly into a small smirk and her gaze shifted to Yamiyo for a moment, thinking of the larger form he can take when given the room to grow. She then looked back up at Fell and looked once more at his tattoos. As she opened her mouth to ask him if they meant something in his old tribe Fenris spoke and she quickly turned her attention to the larger man. Her chocolate gaze then glanced between him and Derric, wondering as well about the altar they were to build and what each of them would have to do. As Derric stood, Hikari watched him carefully and listened to him intently as he walked to each of them around the fire, moving Yamiyo closer to her form slightly as he stood in front of her. Hikari had never been a part of a real family before where those around her possibly cared for her and Yamiyo. Her true family rejected her and the samurai she joined were too busy crawling over one another to impress the shogun to truly care for one another. Would this be the same? A family born from blood, crawling over one another to impress the goddess with a better sacrifice than the last. A soft sigh left her lips as she pulled herself from her thoughts, it’s not like she hadn’t been in a family like that before and she did miss being in a group instead of on her own. “Yamiyo and I will do what we can to help with the shrine and make sure that the barbarians are known throughout the kingdoms,” Hikari pledged as her free hand rested on the hilt of her katana.

Fell nodded eagerly, inspired by Derric's speech. "Then we'll get started in the morning." He stretched out on the ground, resting his hands behind his head as he gazed up at the stars. He knew better than anyone that when people were bonded together, it was the most powerful thing in the world. Well, until a larger 'family' chose to stomp them down. But not this time. With a goddess on their side, how could they lose?

Louisa masked her irritation at Derric's lack of response to her subtle flirtation; there was plenty of time still, she reminded herself. As he rose and began to speak, she listened intently, her expression intrigued, already pandering to the role of a devout follower. Not to be outdone by the commitment of Hikari and Fell, she stood and stepped over to grasp Derric's hand in both of hers when he finished speaking. "You'll see no doubt from me," she said firmly. "I will commit myself fully to our cause, and family." The last words were said with a glance toward the others sitting by the fire.

Hikari sat silently on a larger tree branch near the fire pit they had used the night before. She gently brushed her hand over Yamiyo’s head as he curled around her shoulders, her eyes stuck on the ashes in the pit almost in a trance. Her mind continued to go over the words that Derric had spoken and how they were to become a “family”. Her brows furrowed at the thought, she truly didn’t understand the word and what it meant to be in a family. Though after a few moments, curiosity filled her dark eyes as her gaze finally broke from the ashes down below and glanced towards Fenris, one of the brothers that had stayed after Derric’s speech.
Fell had said Fenris was his older brother so they were obviously family through blood. Though had they been a part of a larger family before coming here? Would they know more than she did about family? Hikari watched Fenris for a moment before jumping down from her spot, Yamiyo disappearing from her shoulders as she landed on the ground. She then stood and made her way over towards the larger man. “Do you mind me asking, where are you and your brother from?” She asked as she approached Fenris, stopping at a tree nearby for her to lean on.

Fenris had slept soundly through the night, and as the day broke, was sitting by the remains of the fire, sharpening his knives as he processed what he and Fell had agreed to do. It seemed surreal to him, but he was eager to begin. As Hikari joined him, he grunted softly and turned his eyes back to his task. "A tribe to the west, on the edge of what are now Nethilor's lands." His tone was bitter. "They wanted to expand their walls and my tribe was standing in the way. The broke us with their army and most of us were slaughtered. Fell and I escaped." He paused, trying to keep his tone neutral, but it was clear the memories filled him with rage. It was his true purpose for joining Derric. If Velka was real and could give them powers, he wanted to be part of the uprising that brought Nethilor to it's knees. "Where are you from?" He returned her question.

Hikari’s dark chocolate eyes watched Fenris carefully as he sharpened his weapons, her arms crossing across her chest. She quietly listened to him as he explained what had happened to his home and slowly nodded her head in understanding. That certainly gave him and his brother a reason to join Derric in his cause with the goddess’s help. She let a soft sigh leave her lips as she apologized to him, “I’m sorry to hear that about your home and your people. Blood seems to always spill for those at the top to get what they want.”
As he asked about her home her dark gaze glanced away from Fenris, looking into the forest for a moment. Her eyes looked for every shadow she could find, she supposed it comforted her even though it was the reason she was no longer with her family. “I am from a land far from here,” Hikari began as she held her hand in front of her form and pulled the shadows nearby up into her palm, letting the small shadow ball swirl while she continued, “my family is of light so when they found out about my powers I was told to leave. I joined a group of warriors known as samurai in my home, though we did not last long when our ruler was killed so I left looking for a better life. I suppose this was where I was meant to be in the end.”

Indeed, Fenris had never seen someone who looked like Hikari before. He was used to the brutish tribespeople he had grown up with, contrasted starkly with the nobles of Nethilor and their iron-clad soldiers. He merely grunted as she offered her condolences- he wasn't after sympathy. He was out for blood. He'd water the earth with it.
He watched the shadow grow between her palms with awe, and as Hikari explained about her family, he spat on the ground in disgust. "Only savages turn away their own kin." He growled, obviously angered by the fact that she had been cast out for her differences. In his tribe, differences had been celebrated; they were gifts from the gods. He wasn't sure if he still believed in those gods, but he believed in the principles. "So you are a soldier, then. Why was your ruler killed?"

Hikari blinked in surprise at Fenris’s response then glanced between him and the ground he had spat on. After a moment she released the small shadow that danced around in her palm, allowing it to return to where it came. She then turned and made her way to Fenris’s side, giving him space to continue sharpening the blades of his weapons. Hikari sat down and looked at him curiously with her brows furrowed, wondering what his past life was like. Though her curiosity was halted as he asked of her shogun, a soft sigh leaving her lips.
“He was killed for the same reason your people were slaughtered,” She stated as she leaned back onto her forearms and looked up towards the sky, or at least the bit of sky she could see between the treetops, “another ruler wanted more land and power, our ruler was in the way of that.” Once again a soft sigh left her lips and she gave a slight shrug of her shoulders. Not much could be done to change the past, all she could do is move forward from there. Hikari let her dark gaze glance towards Fenris as she asked curiously, the thought forming in her head once more of her past instead of focusing on her own, “What was it like to have a family? What is it like to have a sibling that stays by your side?”

Fenris felt a growl in his chest but he pushed it down. It was how he responded to things- in scowls and grunts. Fenris tried to be a man of few words, as his father had been before him. But he'd been well-respected, because when he spoke his words had weight. Fenris aspired to be like that too. When Hikari asked about his family, he fixed her with his piercing dark brown eyes, his hands stilling in their work. "Family is everything. But it's not just blood. It's people you choose, and who choose you. Having Fell by my side is both a blessing and a curse," a slight smile touched his lips as he joked about the fact that while family was everything, it wasn't always easy.

The corner of Hikari’s lips turned up slightly, giving Fenris a smirk in response to his comment of his brother. After her encounter with Fell the night before around the fire, she could understand his joking remark. Though she let these thoughts pass as she took in his statement about family and how it wasn’t just about blood, her brows furrowing at the thought. Her dark chocolate eyes searched his for a moment before asking him in a hushed tone, “Do you truly think this group Derric is forming will become like a family?” She held his gaze, wanting to know his thoughts on what the group would become. She wanted to know if her worries of this group becoming like the last one she was in would true.

“I don’t know. It’s early to say yes. But if it falls apart, it won’t be because of me.” Fenris shrugged his shoulders and put his weapons away. “I’m committed, and I’m loyal. Are you?” He stood, gazing out into the forest. “We should start collecting materials for the altar.”
